jun 20, 451 - Battle of the Catalaunian Plains

Description:

Attila the Hun, imboldened by his successes in the east, had finally reached the western Empire.

After the Emperor's own sister appealed to Attila for help after being forced into an unwanted marriage, Attila claimed her as a wife and the western empire as her dowry.

He sent his forces to Gaul where a final climactic battle between his Huns and vassalised Germans fought against Rome and the German tribes who had fled into their territory.

Although the battle's outcome is disputed, the death toll was high and both Attila and Roman forces left Gaul to its own devices thereafter.
