When Charles the Bald died, his general and friend Boso advocated making his French grandson Louis III the sole heir of the empire, but he and his brother were both elected kings.
Boso renounced allegiance to the brothers and claimed independence. Nobles of the region elected Boso King of Burgundy and successor to Charles the Bald.
