over 2.5 million ppl died in whole conflict, including 54,000 americans | [buildup] diplomacy, threat of nuclear war, sudden death of joseph stalin → china/north korea agreed to an armistice in exchange for prisoners (1953)[effect] fighting stopped, most but not all US troops withdrawn, remained divided at 38th parallel; no peace treaty ever signed despite years of futile negotiations (until last week!)
