jan 1, 632 - Death of Muhammad and the Sunni–Shia Split – (632 CE)

Description:

When the Prophet Muhammad died in 632 CE, Muslims had to figure out who would lead them next. Some people thought the new leader should be chosen by the community—someone wise and trusted. These people supported a man named Abu Bakr. Others believed the leader should come from Muhammad’s family, especially his cousin and son-in-law, Ali. This disagreement created two main groups: Sunnis (who supported Abu Bakr) and Shias (who supported Ali). At first, it was just a political argument about leadership—not about different beliefs in God.

Over time, though, the split became more serious. Each group developed its own traditions, leaders, and ways of practicing Islam. Shias focused on the family of Muhammad and believed his descendants had special spiritual knowledge. Sunnis focused more on the community and the teachings of Muhammad’s companions. Important events, like the death of Ali’s son Hussein in a battle, made the divide even deeper. These stories became part of each group’s identity and history.

Today, many Muslims still identify as Sunni or Shia, even though most don’t think about the original argument much. It might seem strange that a 1,400-year-old disagreement still matters, but it’s part of how people understand their history and community. Just like people in other religions or cultures hold on to old traditions, Muslims have kept these identities alive. It’s not just about religion—it’s also about culture, politics, and family history.
