jan 1, 221 BC - Great Wall Construction Begins – (c. 221 BCE)
Description:
The Great Wall of China began around 221 BCE, when Emperor Qin Shi Huang ordered the connection of older regional walls to protect China from northern invaders like the Xiongnu. These early walls were made mostly of packed earth and wood, and building them took a huge workforce, including soldiers, farmers, and prisoners. The wall wasn’t just for defense — it also showed that China was now united under one powerful ruler.
Later dynasties, especially the Han and the Ming, expanded and strengthened the wall between 100 CE and the 1600s. They used stone and bricks and added watchtowers to help guards spot threats. The wall also helped control trade and movement along the Silk Road. Even though it didn’t stop every invasion, it became a powerful symbol of China’s strength, organization, and long-lasting civilization.
