oct 24, 1824 - The Election of 1824

Description:

The election was between John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, William H. Crawford, and Andrew Jackson. Henry Clay was adamant about his American System and was also speaker of the House so he could not follow through with the election. Crawford fell ill so the election became between John Quincy Adams and Jackson. The House voted and Adams won while Henry Clay became Secretary of State. Jackson called this a "corrupt bargain" and began his campaign for 1828 as soon as Adams was sworn in. Soon his influence in Jacksonian democracy would grow.
