BUF organised marches vs East End, estimated 5000-6000 people
100,000-300,000 anti fascist marchers went out to meet them
largest confrontation took place around Aldgate, Aldgate Pump - went from Aldgate High St to Whitechapel High St to St Mary Mateflon Church (now Altab Ali Park)
Gardiner's Corner - blocked their way by people, many made up of Jewish Ex-Servicemen demanded right to march own streets (same right given to fascists)
police instead attacked them, capturing their standard, smashing flag pole to bits
few Muslims in London at the time, but Muslim Somali seamen joined anti-fascist crowd
'They shall not pass.'
