-Outlawed Chinese immigration for 10 years and explicitly denied naturalization rights to Chinese in the U.S. (not allowed to become U.S. citizens)
-1st law to restrict a group of immigrants based on ethnic background
-Strong support in California
-Enacted in part to protect jobs for whites because Chinese were willing to work for much lower wages
- Was supported by labor unions
