jan 1, 800 BC - Kuntillet Ajrud sherd engravings, the oldest depiction of Yahweh
Description:
On a jar, now called Pithos A, are several written and illustrated engravings. At the top of the jar is a Paleo-Hebrew letter aleph. The missing fragments of this jar come right up to the edge of this letter, making the full word unknowable. Below this is a long string of writing, also in Paleo-Hebrew:
אמר אשיו המ״ל״ך אמר ליהלי וליועשה ול ------ ברכת אתכם
ליהוה שמרן ולאשרתה
"-" means the letter is illegible.
"״X״" means it is most likely the letter within the quotes
This translates to, "Says 'Ašiyaw the k[in]g: Say to Yahēliyaw, and to Yaw'āsah, and to ------ blessed are you all to Yahweh of Samaria, and to his Asherah."
