Description:

The Declaration of Independence was the document that finally proclaimed the American colonies’ independence from Great Britain and established the new country composed of thirteen states, the United States. It was commissioned by the Second Continental Congress on June 7, 1776, and a committee including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson was asked to write it, with Jefferson being the main author. After many revisions and much debate, the final declaration was approved on July 2, 1776, and signed two days later on July 4, 1776.
