nov 27, 1095 - November 27, 1095: Pope Urban II gives speech at Clermont signifying the beginning of the First Crusade.

Description:

"All who die by the way, whether by land or by sea, or in battle against the pagans, shall have immediate remission of sins. This I grant them through the power of God with which I am invested. O what a disgrace if such a despised and base race, which worships demons, should conquer a people which has the faith of omnipotent God and is made glorious with the name of Christ! With what reproaches will the Lord overwhelm us if you do not aid those who, with us, profess the Christian religion!" Pope Urban's speech at Clermont was debatably the most influential speech of the Middle Ages, giving rise to the Crusades by calling all Christians in Europe to war against Muslims in order to reclaim the Holy Land, with a cry of “Deus vult!” or “God wills it!” His speech motivated many people to contribute to the efforts, which created the First Crusade's goals and began the long series of massacres against Western European Christians and the Middle East's Muslims.
