The Dissolution of the Soviet Union was a legal and political process where the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) ceased to exist as a sovereign state. The economy had been failing, living standards were not good, and many of the 15 Soviet republics (such as Lithuania, Ukraine and Georgia) wanted independence. By 1990 the Soviet Government had lost so much control that they were not able to stop the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus signing the Belavezha Accords, which declared that the USSR no longer existed. Ending the SSUR was a huge factor in the Cold War ending as it took out the United States main rivalry.
