jan 1, 1093 BC - The Dark Ages description

Description:

The Greek Dark Ages happened from around 1100 to 800 BCE, after the fall of the Cycladic civilization. This time is called the "Dark Ages" because people stopped writing things down and in turn we don't have the most information on it. Most of the cities were abandoned, trade virtually stopped, and people lived in smaller villages instead of large palaces. Life became simpler and there was less building of big structures or nice artwork. Even though it was a tough time, people still made pottery and used oral storytelling to pass down myths and legends, like the ones that would later be written down by Homer in The Iliad and The Odyssey. During the Dark Ages, Greek culture changed but didn’t go away completely. People still shared beliefs in gods like Zeus, Aphrodite, and Athena and still probably gathered at sacred places to praise them. Customs like burying deceased people with important items, such as weapons, tools, or jewelry, still were relevant which shows they believed in an afterlife. Families and communities stayed close together, and leaders called chiefs or kings probably helped keep things organized in each city/village. As time passed, the small communities grew stronger and began forming the city/states that would become very relevant later in Greek history. Although this age was very dark, the Greek people kept their culture alive and well aswell as building a new way of life.
