may 10, 1740 - Negro Act in South Carolina

Description:

This Act was implemented shortly after the unsuccessful Stono Rebellion and denied black people any form of civil rights. Enslaved African people were denied the right to grow their own food, learn to read, move freely, gather in groups, or earn money under the law. White enslavers were also given legal authority to whip or kill those they considered "rebellious."
