In 1609, a rumor spread which claimed that Yanga’s people were planning on overthrowing the Spanish authorities in the nearby towns and making him the new king. That is why Viceroy Luis de Velasco gathered hundreds of troops and sent them to fight Yanga and his community in 1609.
