Description:
Palermo was captured driving out Neapolitan forces, Garibaldi controlled all of Sicily, the Neapolitan army began evacuation to mainland Italy
- he was successful because he surprised the Sicilians, had motivation, had support from the Sicilians peasants, Neapolitan soldiers were demoralised by constant attacks from the revolting peasants and bandits
- Garibaldi instead of immediately ceasing power to Piedmont decides to use Sicily as a base for conquest of Naples
- Cavour warns him not to do this as he was severely outnumbered --> he does not listen
