- a combined Franco-Piedmontese force were victorious- Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II commanded their own forces at Solferino, they were shocked by what they saw with almost 40,000 casualties.
- This contributed to Napoleon’s sudden desire for peace fueled
-fears of other European powers joining the conflict. It also led eventually to the creation of the Red Cross in 1864
