The conclusion of the space race. The Apollo spacecraft docked in orbit with a Soviet Soyuz vehicle. The handshake in space symbolized the gradual improvement of U.S. and Soviet relations/a symbol of the policy of detente.
The Soyuz was the first Soviet mission with a televised launch and landing. It was also the last planned ocean landing for U.S. human spaceflight.
