- Piedmonts army of 45,000 fights against Austrias 70,000

- Piedmont was crushed. Charles albert was forced to abdicate in favour of his son Victor Emmanuel II
- in August he signed a peace treaty was signed recognising Austrian control over Lombardy and imposing and indemnity on Piedmont
- the Statuto remained in place
