Description:

- inspired by French Jacobins
- in 1831, Giuseppe Mazzini founded Young Italy. Mazzini believed in equality, within the context of the nation
- Mazzini, te son of a university professor argued for a centralised and democratic Italian state, created ‘from below’ —> Italy should be able to do it by itself without help from others
- Young Italy —> secret society then turns into the first political party

there is also the Carbonari with similar goals but they were before Young Italy
