jun 30, 2013 - Egyptian coup d'etat

Description:

Following a large-scale protest that saw around 32 million participants on the anniversary of the Muslim Brotherhood's consolidation of power in Egypt, a coup d'etat organized by Egyptian army chief General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi (pictured) removes Morsi and the organization from power.

The protest and subsequent coup is instigated by the public's dissatisfaction with Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood's increased authoritarian leadership and pushing of the Islamist agenda which ignored predominantly secular opposition. Protests continue, and pro-Morsi sit-ins on August 14 are met with lethal force as at least 904 deaths are confirmed, resulting in what Human Rights Watch calls "one of the world's largest killing of demonstrators in a single day in recent history."

El-Sisi eventually wins the election in 2014, placing him as Egypt's president today.
