A Saudi journalist, US-based columnist for the Washington Post, and critic of the Saudi government, Jamal Khashoggi, is assassinated and dismembered by Saudi agents.

Saudi-US relations began originally with oil and security cooperation, blossoming into a partnership to counter terroristic threats and Iran's expanding influence. However, the killing of Khashoggi, Saudi Arabia's bombing of civilians in Yemen, and the government's authoritarian regime and mistreatment of its own people (including gender restrictions placed on women) have created tension and concerns. Despite these abuses of human rights, the US sees Saudi Arabia as an important ally, remaining its largest trading partner.
