jun 18, 2004 - Houthi insurgency begins

Description:

Founded in the 1990s, the Houthis begin as a Shia theological movement in Saada, a governate of Yemen, called The Believing Youth (BY), providing children with school programs and summer camps including theocratic teachings and education. They claim to have formed in reaction to foreign intervention in Yemen such as with Saudi-influenced ideologies as well as the country's former government's past relations with the United States. Additionally, they condemn Yemen's historic system of corruption and marginalization of the Houthi home areas by the country's Sunni majority. The movement is named for its founding brothers, Mohammad and Hussein al-Houthi.

Due to the group's frequent "Death to America" chants, the Yemeni government began to fear the group would shift in opposition to the country's president. Following an arrest of over 800 BY supporters, Hussein launches an insurgency against Yemen's central government and is killed. However, the fight continues until 2010 with the defeat of the Yemeni government who was backed by a billion-dollar Saudi army. A ceasefire is signed.
