- 200 most senior SA figures (including Röhm) arrested —> most executed

- old enemies were also targeted such as von Schleicher, von Kahr

- von Papen is placed under house arrest
- killings are carried out by the SS but

German police stands by
- the day after the killing are retroactively legalised by the Reichstag (murder becomes legalised by the Nazi state)
