It was sparked by demands for political reform, and greater autonomy. It began with a student led protest in budapest, which quickly spread into a large movement across the whole nation, calling for soviet troops to be withdrawed, and free elections. However, this movement was crushed very brutally when soviet forces intervened, and soviet control got reestablished.
