Description:

NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was a military alliance that was formed between the U.S., Canada, and a lot of other western European nations. This was made to provide a collective defense against the Soviets and their expansion. Essentially, if a member of nato gets attacked, its an assault on all of them, and they will attack together. This was caused by growing fear of the soviets, as well as the berlin blockade. It greatly increased cold war tensions, as the soviets felt incredibly threatened. Additionally, it helped strengthen western unity as well.
