jan 1, 1916 - Marcus Garvey and Liberia
Description:
Marcus Garvey was the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in 1914. His popular slogan was "Africa for the Africans," seeing Liberia as a symbolic and practical homeland for Black people all over the world.
Liberia is a West African nation founded by African Americans who used to be enslaved to Caucasians in America.
The Liberia Plan was to move Africans back to Africa, escaping the cruelty and racial injustice of the US. Marcus Garvey, alongside his association UNIA, planned to build schools, houses, businesses, and larger communities in Liberia.
Although the idea was great, the plan failed. The US and other European powers feared Marcus Garvey's influence and worked diplomatically to block the initiative. Because of pressure from such large, influential nations, Liberia had to back down, and it withdrew it's support for Marcus Garvey's plans.
Although the plan ended up failing, this inspired many more African Americans to stand up for themselves and support Black pride and economic independence.
