oct 1, 2019 - Protests erupt

Description:

Following parlimentary elections in the previous year, a series of protests including demonstrations, marches, sit-ins, and civil disobedience erupt across Iraq and lasting roughly 3 years. This activism during this time is claimed to be in response to corruption, high unemployment, political sectarianism (a country's attachment to a particular political party or sect), inefficient public services and foreign interventionism (such as with the US).

As a result, 400 people are killed, leaving the prime minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi (pictured), to resign and Mustafa al-Kadhimi to take his place.
