apr 11, 1968 - Fair Housing Act

Description:

Ongoing riots following Kings assasination pressured congress to pass additional Civil Rights Legislation. The result was the Civil Rights Act of 1968, officially called the Fair Housing Act.

The Fair Housing Act was the final major piece of civil rights legislation passed during the Civil Rights Movement. Its passage came in the wake of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who had been a vocal advocate for fair housing. The Act aimed to address the pervasive housing segregation and discrimination that limited opportunities for minority groups across the country.

While the Fair Housing Act has been instrumental in combating overt forms of housing discrimination, subtler forms, such as discriminatory practices by real estate agents ("steering") and exclusionary zoning policies, persist. The ongoing efforts to affirmatively further fair housing aim to address these more systemic barriers to equal housing opportunity.

This represents the final major achievement of the Civil Rights Era.
