Cause (What started the environmental movement)
There were many environmental problems and accidents.
In 1969, there was a big oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.
The Cuyahoga River near Lake Erie caught on fire because of a chemical spill.
These events were shown on TV and made people very worried.
People wanted to fight pollution and protect nature.
Effect (What happened after)
The Environmental Movement grew stronger.
President Nixon created the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) to help clean the air, water, and land.
The Wilderness Preservation Act (1964) stopped all building on over 9 million acres of federal land.
The Air and Water Quality Acts (1965) were made to stop interstate pollution.
In 1966, the Sierra Club stopped dams from flooding the Grand Canyon.
Earth Day started to help people care more about the environment.
Schools started to teach about nature.
People began recycling and trying solar, wind, and geothermal energy.
