jan 1, 1972 - TOPIC 8.9: The Great Society: Continuity and Change Over Time
Description:
Continuity and Change Over Time
During the 1960s and 1970s, many groups in America fought for their rights. These groups included undocumented immigrants, Hispanic Americans, American Indians, Asian Americans, and people in the Gay Liberation Movement. Their goal was to get equal treatment, more opportunities, and freedom from discrimination.
Undocumented Immigrants from Latin America and Asia came to the U.S. for a better life. Many people from Mexico, Cuba, Vietnam, Korea, and other countries moved to America. After the Vietnam War, the U.S. accepted more than half a million refugees from Vietnam and Asia. In 1965, the Immigration Act ended old unfair rules and allowed more people from these places to enter.
Hispanic Americans wanted better pay and fair working conditions. In the 1960s, Cesar Chavez helped start boycotts to support farm workers. The Chicano Movement and Brown Berets led stronger protests. Colleges also started Chicano Studies programs to support Hispanic history and culture.
American Indians had their own movement. In the 1950s, the U.S. government tried to end Native tribes’ legal rights and move Native people into cities. Many Native people ended up in poor neighborhoods. Later, in the 1960s and 1970s, Native Americans fought back. In 1969, they took over Alcatraz Island. In 1972, they took over the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In 1973, there was a protest at Wounded Knee. They wanted more control over their land and rights. Laws like the Self-Determination Act of 1974 helped tribes get more power again.
Asian Americans also grew in number. Some came as war brides from Japan and Korea. Others came after the U.S. ended the Chinese ban in 1943. By 2010, Asian Americans were the fastest-growing group in the U.S.
The Gay Liberation Movement also began to grow. People fought for legal, social, and economic equality. They wanted to be treated fairly and have the same rights as others.
Change: More groups began to fight for their rights during this time. They organized protests, made demands, and got new laws passed. There was more attention to equality for immigrants, minorities, and LGBTQ+ people.
Continuity: These groups continued to face problems like poverty, discrimination, and unfair treatment. The fight for equality was long and not finished during this time.
