During a major outbreak of the plague, Queen Elizabeth I issued the first nationwide quarantine orders in England. Infected households were locked and marked with a red cross, and watchers were assigned to prevent anyone from leaving. Burials had to be conducted at night, and infected clothing and bedding were burned.
