The Soviet union was defeated by the US because when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan the invasion turned to a decade-long war, large amounts of casualties, and the end of the Soviet Union. The US was also successful because of the Truman doctrine which provided, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations in need of help if under threat from enemies, Which gave the US allies. As well the economy and life in the Soviet union was quite terrible and pressure from the US and other European countries led to the collapse of the Soviet union.
