Cause:
After WWII, the GI Bill was made to help veterans.
It gave them money for college.
It also helped them get jobs and homes.
Effect:
Many veterans went to college.
College became normal for middle class people.
More minorities could go to college with affirmative action.
Community colleges were also added to teach job skills.
Baby Boom
Cause:
Veterans came back from the war.
They started families.
Effect:
From 1946 to the early 1960s, there was a huge increase in babies.
It was called the baby boom.
Most people got married, and divorce was very rare.
Sunbelt and Suburbia
Cause:
People wanted better homes and lives.
The South and West had defense jobs and military bases.
Air conditioning made hot places more livable.
Effect:
Many people moved to the Sun Belt (South and West).
People also moved to the suburbs for bigger homes.
California grew because of defense jobs and good weather.
The South became stronger in politics, while the Northeast lost power.
Taft-Hartley Act (Attack on Unions)
Cause:
After the war, some people thought unions had too much power.
Effect:
The Taft-Hartley Act was passed.
It made it harder for unions to strike or ask for more rights.
It was seen as an attack on unions
