sep 2, 1979 - Ba'ath Party Purge

Description:

Saddam Hussein, previously Iraq's Vice President, is elected President of the Iraqi Republic. Six days later, he orchestrates a purge, or removal and execution, of Ba'ath Party members in government positions due to their suspected efforts in the pro-Syrian plot to remove Hussein from power.

21 members of the Ba'ath Party are convicted and executed for crimes of conspiracy and high treason against their party. Ties with Syria's Ba'athist regime are also cut. Hussein addresses the nation, faking tears.
