jul 14, 1958 - 1958 Iraqi coup d'etat
Description:
In another coup d'etat, King Faisal II, grandson of King Faisal I, is overthrown, and Iraq transitions from a monarchy to a republic. Due to widespread dissatisfaction with Western influence, a military group known as the Iraqi Free Officers, under Colonel Abdul Salam Arif and Brigadier Abdul-Karim Qasim, marches on Baghdad and seizes control. With units of the Iraqi Royal Army dispatched in Jordan, there was little resistance.
With Abdul-Karim Qasim as the state's prime minister, the Republic of Iraq is established and pulls itself from the Baghdad Pact to align with the Soviet Union.
