Description:

In 1960, the McCabes, the family Melba lived with while the issues at Central were figured out, convinced Melba to further her education and go to college. While she was at San Francisco State University, Melba once again became a warrior as she was the only person of color in a boarding house. While there were other options for her, she had been told "...the only blacks allowed there were cooks" (Beals 220). Melba knew this had to be changed, so she signed up and integrated the previously all white student housing. Fifteen years after segregation was determined illegal, there were so many places still kept separate. And even after integrating Central, Melba had to keep on fighting for her rights and go even further into the Civil Rights Movement.
