The US designates the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. (IRGC), a branch of Iran's military, as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO). This is the first time that the US has marked another country's military as an FTO. This comes a week after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweets that he personally requested the move.

Tensions will worsen just months later with attacks on US and British oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway along Iran which involves the transport of about 1/5th of the world's oil. US President Trump will deploy an additional 1,000 troops to SWANA in response. Iran denies the attacks despite facing blame.
