US Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales murders 16 Afghan civilians and wounds six others in Panjwayi, Afghanistan. Of his victims, 9 were children and 11 were of the same family. He is sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.Following this mass killing, Karzai calls for the removal of US troops from Afghanistan. President Obama begins planning the withdrawal of troops 2 years later, only to abandon this plan by the end of his presidency.
