Al-Qaeda orchestrates attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon by hijacking 4 commercial airplanes and flying them into their targets, while one plane crashes into a field in Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 civilians are killed during these attacks.The United States responds by invading Afghanistan, where Al-Qaeda is based and Osama bin Laden, responsible with the attacks, is said to be hiding with help from the Taliban.
