sep 27, 1996 - Taliban seizes power
Description:
The Taliban, with support from Al-Qaeda, seizes control of the country, referring to it as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and enforcing a strict interpretation of Sharia, or Islamic, law. These enforcements include limitations for women such as their barring from many public spaces such as school or work, and requirements to be full "veiled." Despite putting an official end to the civil war, the Taliban still faces resistance from some groups.
Their disregard for many human rights puts them on the radar for many Western nations. The United States recognize their authority in Afghanistan.
