Mujahideen veteran Osama bin Laden, the son of a millionaire Saudi Arabian family, forms the resistance group known as Al-Qaeda, or "the base." They intend to continue their jihad, or holy war, against the Soviets and eventually shift their focus against the United States, believing that any superpower influence is harmful to Afghanistan and the Islamic state.
