Reports flood in regarding the violations of human rights taking place under the new regime following the Saur Revolution, leading to full-scale investigations by organizations such as Human Rights Watch. The Khalqist faction of the PDPA is said to be taking part in mass arrests, torture, and executions on a scale unseen before, including the mass execution of 27,000 prisoners after gaining power.
The Soviet army is believed to be intentionally targeting civilians with their attacks. Some scholars refer to their campaign as a genocide against the Afghans.
