Fidel Castro and 139 other rebel attacked the military base in Santiago as a way to fight against Batista's corrupt government. Batista was a former military general elected president. He was very corrupt as he dealt with crime organizations, dissolved the Cuban's original constitution, and took away many rights. Fidel Castro was a lawyer and argued that this was unconstitutional. The court never responded and led to Castro fighting back. Fidel Castro would be captured and exiled from Cuba after the attack
