Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, by Gavrilo Princip. Princip was a Serbian nationalist. The assassination caused Austria to launch an assault on Serbia, ultimately leading to the outbreak of WW1.
