apr 11, 1968 - Indian Civil Rights Act
Description:
In an attempt to reverse past policies which actively encouraged the assimilation of Indigenous people, governments, and tribes into the United States, the Indian Civil Rights Act sought to guarantee constitutional rights for those within tribal jurisdiction. While not entirely identical to the rights enshrined in the U.S.’s Bill of Rights, the rights guaranteed by the relatedly nicknamed Indian Bill of Rights (here referred to as the Indian Civil Rights Act of 1968) were quite similar. Tribal governments are prohibited from passing laws which encroach upon these rights, ideally guaranteeing them for all who reside within the land mass that is the United States.
