jul 2, 1964 - Civil Rights Act of 1964
Description:
A landmark piece of legislation, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 set about removing the many, many barriers that had actively prevented racial equality in the United States. In short, it wrote into law the end of segregation and discrimination based on race. Additionally, school and job admissions were no longer allowed to discriminate based on race or gender, which had an incredible impact on student bodies and workforces. While supported by subsequent court cases and Acts, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was monumental in undoing the racial discrimination that had been baked into the foundations of America since its inception. There is still much to be done to account for hundreds of years of racial slavery, racial discrimination, and just general racism. The ramifications of the settler colonial structure were and still are apparent. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 marked a strong step in the right direction.
