dec 29, 1890 - Wounded Knee Massacre

Description:

The Wounded Knee Massacre (often called a “battle”, though this implies a relatively fair fight, which this was not) resulted in the deaths of an estimated 250 and 300 Miniconjou (a subdivision of the Lakota), half of which were women and children. The result of a misfired gun following an attempted and overly invasive weapons seizure, the Massacre led to horrific violence and needless bloodshed. The general who initiated the seizure and led the attack was deemed innocent and had his post restored to him, while 20 of the perpetrators were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. These were later rescinded in 2021 with the Remove the Stain Act.
