dec 10, 2015 - Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
Description:
President Obama signed the ESSA into law on December 10th, 2015, and this act worked to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The main goal of this act was to provide equal opportunity for all school students. The previous version of this law was the No Child Left Behind Act, which was passed in 2002 to ensure that students were able to make progress in school no matter their race, income, disability, or background. ESSA required (for the first time ever) that all students in America be taught "to high academic standards that will prepare them to succeed in college and careers" (US Department of Education). This act also established the expectation that there would be action to help the lower performing schools to increase their graduation rates over time. The act was important for upholding the support that students who have special needs require to succeed in school. (US Department of Education)
