The Tunguska event was a massive explosion of 3 to 50 megatons near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Yeniseysk Governorate, Russia, on 30 June 1908. The explosion killed an estimated 80 million trees and injured up to three people. The event was attributed to a meteor air burst, which was the atmospheric explosion of a stony asteroid about 50-60 meters wide. The asteroid approached from the east-south-east at a high speed of 27 km/s. Although classified as an impact event, the asteroid exploded at an altitude of 5 to 10 kilometers, leaving no impact crater. This event is the largest impact event on Earth in recorded history, capable of destroying a large metropolitan area. The event has been depicted in numerous works of fiction and has an equivalent Torino scale rating of 8.
